However, when our children, Matthew and Rae-Michelle, entered school, I
found too many work evenings away from home interfered with my ability to
be the father I strived to be.

I changed careers, entering the publishing industry and sold advertising
for a weekly newspaper. Within two years, I was General Manager and,
over the next 27 years, shepherded the company through growth that saw our
paper grow from 20 to 64 pages and our circulation grow from 15,000 to 63,000
homes. When my children graduated from college, Matt relocated to
Arizona and Rae-Mi moved to California. My wife of 38 years now, Francine,
and I traveled to Sedona, Arizona to see our son and that trip changed my
life. Sedona is a Mecca for the people who love hiking and biking
as much as I have for the last 20 years. Here in Sedona, I have 113
marked hiking trails in some of the most beautiful scenery in the U.S.
so hiking was a weekly endeavor. The wide biking lanes make riding
here a dream. Additionally, its majestic red rocks have a way of feeding
one spiritually. I fell in love with this place and made it a goal
to live there someday.

Some
day arrived nine years later in October of 2008. I retired from the
newspaper and Fran sold the dance studio she had owned for 24 years.
We moved to the place of our dreams, Sedona, Arizona and live there with
our German shepherd, Max, and Siberian husky, Keva, much closer to our son,
Matt, and daughter, Rae-Mi. One potential stumbling block for our
move was having adequate health insurance at a premium we could afford.
For over 25 years, I was responsible for shopping our newspaper company’s
